Doug and I go back to 1960. He opened my eyes to much, especially in the natural world. Memories: examining a fallen swift for damage; releasing a trapped bullfinch caught in an orchard trap; the excitement of emptying a moth trap; lizards in the French maquis; identifying sea birds off Trio; wild flowers in Austria and the Rhone. Enthusiasm linked to knowledge, an unbeatable combination. Farewell friend; but not farewell while memories last.
